Shimano Calais DC Model # CL201DC Reel

X-Ship provides improved gear durability. By
supporting the pinion gear on both ends with
bearings, the pinion gear maintains precise alignment
with the drive gear. This means the gears will stay in
the same position under the heaviest loads. The
added benefit is that friction between the spool shaft
and gear are eliminated. This will enhance the
casting performance of the reel with lighter lures, and
allow for longer casts.
Platinum Service Plan

With the Platinum Service Plan,
when you register your warranty

Warranty Center; shipping excluded.
Escape Hatch

By flipping a switch, the sideplate
swivels downward, giving the angler
quick access to adjust the VBS
weights. The switch is located in a
position that is easy to use, yet
remains out of the way to prevent
accidental opening. The sideplate is
smooth for comfort when palming the
Super Free (SF)

The Super Free bearing-supported pinion gear
system (SF) was designed to eliminate friction on the
spool shaft during the cast. In standard baitcasting
reels, when the clutch bar is pressed down, the pinion
gear is freed and can actually drag on the spool shaft,
creating friction and limiting the length of the cast.
With SF, the pinion gear is supported by a ball
bearing, and when the clutch is disengaged the pinion
gear and spool shaft are kept in precise alignment.
The result is zero friction on the spool shaft for
increased freespool.
Super Stopper II

Super Stopper II anti-reverse uses a
one-way bearing that eliminates
backplay.This provides the angler
with instant hooksetting power. In
some reels, the Super Stopper II can
be turned off to allow backreeling for
special techniques and situations.
S A-RB Bearings

These bearings have been through
the same process as our A-RB
bearings, but feature shields on both
sides of the bearings that reduce the
possibility of salt or sand inhibiting
the bearing's rotation.
Micro Module Gear

The Micro Module Gear System
creates a smooth retrieve. The new
gear set makes use of smaller teeth
and more of them. This means that
there are more contact points
between the drive gear and pinion
gear. The result is a more efficient
gear train with less gear feel.
SVS Infinity Brake System

Shimano's newest innovation in brake system
technology, SVS Infinity provides easy-to-manage,
consistent spool control and brake force. With brake
weights that use inner friction against the raceway
during the cast, SVS Infinity controls spool speed for
precision casting especially when using lighter lures.
The external adjustment knob provides for quick,
precise adjustments for either the conditions or when
you switch baits.
Shimano’s newest innovation in brake system
technology - SVS Infinity - also enhances casting
accuracy and increases casting distance, especially
when using lighter lures. The external adjustment knob
is also in a more convenient position (bottom, left side
of reel) for easier one-handed operation. Available in
three gear ratios, including a blazing fast 8.5:1 gear
ratio, whether you like to flip, throw jerkbaits or drag
worms, there is a Shimano Metanium Casting Reel
perfect for the task.

Shimano's Calais DC Casting Reel won Best of Show at
ICAST 2006 in the freshwater reel category. This reel
takes digital casting control to the next level.
The 4x8 Digital Control® Braking System was thoroughly
analyzed for mechanical and environmental conditions
and the resulting design incorporated four new profiles:
Extreme Distance X to allow for more than 50,000 RPM;
Long Distance Mode L for most fishing applications;
Accuracy Mode A for skipping and pitching; and Wind
Mode W for casts into headwinds.
These four profiles each have eight settings for a total of
32 different settings, which can handle just about any
kind of fishing situation. Additional features include the
Magnumlite aluminum spool, the Super Free bearing
supported pinion gear system, the High Efficiency
Gearing to allow for fast 7:1 gear ratio, at tapered titanium
levelwind insert that makes it easier to thread the line and
reduces friction during casting and the super smooth
Dartanium Drag that is capable of generating 12 lbs. of
drag. Both DC reels have 10 shielded A-RB® anti-rust
ball bearing plus one A-RB roller bearing.

Shimano has taken their Digital Control technology to a
new level with the Calais DC. The original DC system is
excellent for most bass fishing and inshore applications.
However, the original Digital Control was not ideally
suited for slow spool speed applications like skipping or
To address slow speed applications Shimano developed
the 4x8 Digital Control Brake System. To develop the

System. For this new system, Shimano thoroughly
analyzed casting mechanisms for various environmental
and mechanical conditions. Then we divided these
situations into four different modes and created four
profiles to handle them: Extreme Distance Mode X, a
very specific profile that allows for more than 50,000
RPM; Long Distance Mode L, an all-around profile for
most fishing applications; Accuracy Mode A, an
excellent profile for skipping or pitching; and Wind
Mode W, a profile for casts into a headwind. Each
Mode has eight different brake-strength settings for a
total of 32 brake settings.
